Museum ^ is situated in the Western part of the area Fatahillah. Museum ^ will tell visitors about the " ^ " Indonesian shadow theatre, in productions which used puppets "^".
Such theatres of shadows widespread on the Islands of Java and Bali. Puppets are made of Buffalo leather, then the figure is attached to bamboo sticks. Figures moving behind the screen of a Dalang, actor-puppeteer. Most often, the Dalang is a storyteller, he also sings and sometimes even composes the plot.
The Museum was built on the spot where once stood the Church. The temple was built in 1640 and was named the Old Dutch Church. In 1732, the Church building was updated, and the temple became known as the New Dutch Church. In 1808, the earthquake destroyed the Church. Later, in 1912, on the ruins of the Church built a new building in neo-Renaissance style. First, the building housed the warehouse of the company "Geo Wehry & Co". In 1938 the building was renovated to make the features of the Dutch colonial style. Later the building was bought by the scientific community of Batavia, which dealt with issues of culture and science Indonesia. The scientific community gave to the building Fund of the Old Batavia, and in 1939 there was a Museum of Old Batavia. In 1957, after Indonesia gained independence, the building was transferred to the Institute of Indonesian culture, and then to the Ministry of education and culture. After passing all the bureaucratic red tape, in 1968, the administration of the capital district of Jakarta decided to erect a building of the Museum ^ . The Grand opening of the Museum took place in 1975.
