Constitution square of Kharkiv is one of the most Central and oldest squares of the city. Date of Foundation, in 1659 year, and then was established the Kharkov fortress. Since then the area has been named differently. Initially it was called a Fairground, as there is every year conducted Uspenskaya fair, the largest in the country. Later, when the area began to build stone buildings, it was Nicholas Church, on which the square was named Nicholas. With the arrival of the Soviets, the area was named after a wrestler for the Soviet power, M. S. Tevelev, a member of the underground organization in Kharkiv. So it was called until 1975. Then it was called the Soviet Ukraine Square, and since 1996 is the present name - the Constitution square.
With the advent of square, when it was not buildings, in the winter, it was a favorite place for sledding. But in the nineteenth century, the area began to be built the first stone houses. The first was the building of the Noble Assembly and a police station (unfortunately, they have not survived). On the contrary, were built Bank buildings, where there is now the Central savings Bank, a puppet Theater, Home technology, and transport College. It was further constructed building of the hotel "Metropol" and dwelling house, where now stands the Palace of labour. Two Bank buildings, now one of them is the faculty of the pedagogical Institute, in another regional branch of the society "Knowledge". Then - House mutual credit, now the restaurant "Central".
As already mentioned, the square was the Church of St. Nicholas (Nikola), but when laying the tram tracks, the Church was demolished. Now under the square there are two metro station “Historical Museum” and “Soviet”.
Severely damaged buildings during the Second world war. Many of them were destroyed, but after it finished by the Kharkiv them were recovered.
