St. George Church Photo: St. George's Church

St. George Church was built on the old Christian cemetery of the city of Kobryn presumably in 1889 by the parishioners. Perhaps she was rebuilt from the former in its place abolished Prechistenskaya Church. On these facts indicates "Grodno Orthodox Church calendar" from 1899.

The cemetery is called the Old Christian, however, it can be assumed that originally it was a multi-confessional cemetery on the outskirts of Kobryn, later there was built the Church of St. George and were buried only Orthodox Christians. Judging by the condition of the cemetery monuments and graves at the cemetery are well maintained and support all its territory in perfect order. The cemetery is surrounded by a low fence made of red brick.

St. George, in whose honor was consecrated this Church, is one of the most venerated of Orthodox Christian saints. George St. is named for one of his exploits – the defeat of a terrible serpent who lived in the Lebanese mountain lake. Saint George defeating the serpent, a symbol of invincibility Orthodox soldiers and military virtue.

In Soviet times the Church was closed. After the collapse of the USSR Kobrin authorities it was decided to reopen and sanctify in 2005. The Church kept a list of the image of St. George and some of his relics.

The Church is a historical-cultural monument and one of the few remaining wooden churches in the territory of the city of Kobryn.
