Jermuk waterfall is one of striking natural attractions of Armenia. It is located at an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level near the town of Jermuk in Vayots-Dzor. Waterfall, reaching a height of 68 meters, is the second highest in the country, second only to Kasakh.

According to the legend, long ago on top of a cliff was a castle of a local nobleman, who had a very beautiful daughter. Many noble young men asked for her hand, but she was turned away because the fates love with a poor but handsome son of a shepherd. Every night she pulled out her window in the gorge of the rope so that her beloved could meet her. Father, once hearing of this, became very angry and said that if she will meet again with him, he'll turn into a mermaid and will never get out of the water. The daughter obeyed his father and that night, without ropes, she pulled gorge in her long hair. Then and fulfilled his father's prophecy – the girl turned into a mermaid, and her hair streams down from the cliff. Since then the people of this waterfall is called "Maiden's braids" or "Waterfall Mermaid".

Due to the fact that Jermuk waterfall is surrounded by beautiful natural landscape of the southern slopes of the Vardenis mountains, it is very popular among tourists. Water, falling from the height of the powerful streams, below creates a huge amount of white foam and forms a great cloud of spray. This amazing natural phenomenon fascinates with its beauty.

In addition, the waterfall has long been known for its healing properties. High quality mineral water from these sources contains a variety of chemical elements that are beneficial to the human body.
