Panorama "defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855" tells about one of the episodes of the 349-day heroic defense of Sevastopol - the reflection of the defenders of the city storm 6 June 1855, the author of the panorama - the founder of Russian panoramic art Franz Roubaud (1856-1928), Professor of the battle-painting class of the St. Petersburg Academy of arts, and then full member of the Academy.

The panorama was opened may 14, 1905, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the glorious epic. Original round building with a dome, surmounted by a rotunda, erected under the project of military engineer O. I. Enberg and architect V. A. Feldman.

Inside the building is itself a painting and a detailed plan, located on a special platform. According to the artist, the viewer, up to the special observation deck, as if she's on top of Malakhov Kurgan in summit day on 6 June 1855

During the great Patriotic war Nazi bombs destroyed the building of the Panorama, unique painting on fire. Risking their lives, the Soviet soldiers made part of the canvas from the flaming building. After the war the panorama was recreated by the Soviet artists.

In 1974 in the exterior niches of the building have marble sculptural portraits of admirals V. A. Kornilov, P. Nakhimov, V. I. Istomin. A. I. Panfilov, doctor P. I. Pirogov, writer L. N. Tolstoy.
