The Museum of fine arts Photo: Museum of fine arts

The Museum of fine arts, or the groeninge Museum, was opened on the centenary of the independence of Belgium. Until that time it was located in the building of the Academy of arts, which in its heyday in 1902, he held a large exhibition of works by Flemish painters of the fifteenth century, which aroused great interest not only to art but also to the Museum. Established in 1903, “the Society of friends of the Museum” with the support of the state and the province has expanded its collection of 40 paintings by old and modern artists. Currently it is the most valuable part, placed in chronological order in the beautiful halls, the velvet-covered steel color.

During the construction of the new building of the Museum have taken all measures to operate it as a repository of art treasures, for example, falls on top diffused light, allowing you to avoid falling on the picture glare preventing their inspection.

The Museum houses many of the most valuable monuments of art created by the masters of Bruges. Among them, the genius of Hugo van der goes painting “assumption of the virgin”, about the life and work of which little is known. In the other rooms display works by Hans Memling, Gerard David, Lancelot Blondel, as well as watercolors and engravings of the great English painter of the XX century Frank Brangwyn. All these works together with other collections worthy of a serious and careful study, turn the groeninge Museum in the treasure trove of works of art.
