Library and art gallery, Zelante attracts attention for its name similar to the name of a mythical Muse. That's right – Zelandia – called extensive library and art gallery in Acireale, one of the cultural attractions of the city. The monumental building in which they are placed, is located on the street via Sangiuliano. It was built in the 19th century by engineer Mariano Panebianco, one of the greatest minds of his time in the history of Sicily.
However, the history of the library goes farther back in time and goes back to 1716, the ninth year. Today it is considered one of the richest libraries in southern Italy – it contains more than 250 thousand volumes and numerous manuscripts, brochures, magazines and papers.
Beginning art galleries, in turn, was laid in 1851, the year. The initiator of its creation was Paolo Leonardo of Pennisi, donated to the Academy of art his collection of paintings, sketches and sculptures. Today here are collected many works that have immense historical and artistic value, dated to the second half of the 16th century – first half of the 20th century. Among the artists you can highlight Giacinto Platania, who is considered the father of the local school of painting, Matteo Ragonese, Pietro Paolo Wasta, Emanuele Grasso, Sarah mantle and others. There are also the works of internationally recognized artists – Durer, Morelli and van Dyck.
Also noteworthy is the section of sculptures, especially the composition depicting a cowgirl ACI and him in love with the nymph Galatea – heroes of the myth about the Foundation of Acireale. This composition was made in 1846, the year for exhibition in Palermo.
