Villa d este, once bore the name Villa del Garowe, is an aristocratic mansion built in the Renaissance style in Cernobbio on lake Como. But her story begins in the mid-15th century, when Gerardo Landriani, Bishop of Como, in 1442 decided to found a convent at the mouth of the river Garowe. One hundred years later, the cardinal Tolomeo Gallo ordered to demolish the monastery and build in its place a private summer residence. The construction works lasted from 1565 to 1570, was directed by the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi. While Gallio was in power, his Villa was a real haven for politicians, intellectuals and religious figures. After the death of cardinal Villa del Garowe became the property of his family and partially collapsed. From 1749 to 1769-th, there was the Jesuit center, and then building several times passed from hand to hand, until in 1784, the year the house is not bought the Milan collection Calderari, which has initiated a large-scale restoration works. At the same time around the Villa was defeated Italian garden with a beautiful Nymphaeum (sanctuary artificial grotto and a temple, which housed the statue of Hercules from the 17th century. In 1815, the year Villa became the residence of Caroline of Brunswick, wife of the future king George IV. It gave his estate the new name Nuova Villa d este (named after the famous Villa d este Rome) and ordered to redesign the garden in the English style.
