St. George Cathedral, located in the homonymous square, is one of the pearls of Lviv late Baroque architecture. This is the main Shrine of the Greek Catholic Church. The construction of the Cathedral, designed by Bernard Meretyn lasted from 1744 to 1764 years. Completed construction architect Sebastian fessinger.

The Cathedral is located on a hill that allows you to see the Golden dome from many corners of the suburbs of Lviv. The architectural ensemble includes the Metropolitan's house, the bell tower, home of the Chapter surrounding the Cathedral on three sides, and a gate, decorated with sculptures of saints.
To the temple can be reached by a staircase, decorated with a balustrade and statues, and numerous lights. On the main facade there are the statues of St. Athanasius and Leo is the work of sculptor I. Penzes. Up in the attic, is a sculptural group work by the same author – "Yuri Fighter".

The decoration draws its splendor and beauty. Royal and deacon's gate in the altar part is made by S. Passengera in 1768. The temple contains two miraculous icons – icon Tarabulski virgin SEVENTEENTH century and an icon of the Kievo-Pecherskaya Mother of God XVII V.

In the crypt of the Cathedral are the tombs, the burial place for prominent figures of the Ukrainian Church: cardinal Sylvester Semibratovo, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, Volodymyr sterniuk, cardinal Josyf Blind, Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky. In the crypt are buried the remains of the Galician Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl, who lived in the TWELFTH century.

In the 90-ies of XX century, the Cathedral was returned to believers, and since then the temple is being restored. In 2001, during his visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II lived in the Metropolitan Palace of St. George's Cathedral.
