The powder tower is a historic landmark of the glorious city of Lviv and is located in the Basement. The tower was built in 1554-1556, and is a monument of military architecture of the Renaissance.

The powder tower is one of the last powerful and irresistible urban defensive towers, which are preserved in the ancient town to our time. The tower was located on the earthworks for urban defensive structures and a deep ditch with water and guarded the approaches to the city from the Eastern side from enemies. Material for construction of the facility was necesaria stones from an old demolished city Arsenal. She was almost impenetrable defensive barrier, since the thickness of its walls was 2, 5-3 M., in which all sides were equipped with loopholes.

The tower was also used as storage for gunpowder, ammunition, weapons, and in days of peace it kept the grain. When Galicia was part of Austria-Hungary, it was the barracks, and later artillery workshops. For four centuries around the Powder tower, the ground level has risen by almost two meters, hiding its lower part.

In 1954, the powder tower was restored. In 1959, before entering the building were located the sleeping lions of the NINETEENTH century. In the same year the tower was transferred to the Lviv House of the architect. In 1973 restoration was carried out, after which the powder tower acquired its present shape. Today, on the first floor of the tower are cozy restaurant and a shop where you can buy different Souvenirs.
