Ericeira is located on the West coast of Portugal, 35 km North-East of Lisbon. Ericeira is a popular holiday destination for locals and tourists from all over the world. Climatic features (high concentration of iodine) brought the popularity of Ericeira and every year the number of visitors increases.

Ericeira is a small district, with an area of about 13 sq. km. as well Ericeira is known as a seaside resort and attracts a huge number of Amateur surfers for its perfect for this sport beaches, of which there are about forty. Here is the largest center of surfing in Europe, which opened a school and began teaching the sport to all interested persons, including tourists. The most famous beach on which the surf, and on which the championship is held – the beach of Ribeira de Ilhas.

The name of this little village, which is known as a fishing area, comes from "Oricare", which, in turn, is derived from aurico" - the words in the translation which means "sea urchin" (sea urchins were painted on the coat of arms of the district). There is a legend that Ericeira was the land of sea urchins due to a huge number of these individuals who lived along the coastal beaches. However, recent studies do not confirm this fact. There is also a view that the name of the village has Phoenician roots and is associated with the Phoenician goddess of love, Astarte.

Among the attractions of Ericeira is worth noting the local Philharmonic, which has existed since 1849. It is also worth to visit the chapel of Santa Maria Ericeira XV century.
