The Elevador de Santa Justa (also called a Lift Do Carmo) connects vertically the lower and upper town. It was built in the early twentieth century by the French architect Raoul Messge du Ponsard, an apprentice of the famous architect Eiffel.
Filigree patterns adorn the pillars of the lift, made of cast iron. Two cabins are moving up and down, each for 25 people. At the top of the lift there is also a café with a magnificent view over Lisbon and its suburbs.
