Tower Torre de Belem Photo: Tower of Torre de belém

Tower Torre de Belem was originally conceived as a five-tiered fortress lighthouse on the river Tagus. It was built in 1515-1521, under Manuel I. Hence Portuguese navigators set sail to discover new trade routes. During the Napoleonic wars, the building was half destroyed, but completely renovated in 1845. In Bastion, dedicated to the virgin Mary, whose patronage brings good luck, kept the image of the blessed virgin in a sea shell.

The tower, built in the Manueline style, richly decorated on the outside with images of ropes, openwork balconies, turrets and Arabic-style battlements. Balustrade bypass the galleries of the fortress wall is decorated with the coats of arms of knights of the order.

Until recently the Tower served as a prison and Armory. From the top of the tower offers a magnificent view.
