It sounds strange, but the New Wimbledon theatre is located on Broadway. London Broadway – typical street of the suburb, built a neat two-story houses. But Baroque theatre, surmounted by a cupola with a gilded statue that can decorate any city.
The building, however, only seems to be old: it was built by the architect Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy young theatre opened in 1910 pantomime "Jack and Jill". He was extremely popular between the two world wars – here played star cinema and music hall Gracie fields, actress Sybil Thorndike, popular Welsh composer and singer Ivor Novello. During the Second world war the building of the theatre suffered a few unexpected ways – the gilded statue of the Roman goddess of fun Letitia on his dome was too good benchmark for Nazi bombers. The statue was removed and placed on a former place only in 1991.
In 1961 it was from here began the March through the world famous musical "Oliver!" by British writer and pop composer Lionel Bart. Here in 1963, the world premiere of the musical Comedy "Pagasa" with the idol of the youth of the sixties Tommy Steele in the title role.
In 1991 and 1998, the theatre was reconstructed. It has retained its Baroque style and neo-classical "style of the brothers Adam" interior – walls, ceilings, furniture, and fixtures. Now in the theater 1670 spaces on three levels. This makes it the eighth largest theatre London. In addition, there is a small room-Studio with 80 seats, which put the shows fans. This site uses every summer Edinburgh festival.
Completion of reconstruction coincided with the financial crisis of theatre in 2003, he for some time had closed. The situation was saved by a transition under the management of ATG involved in theatrical management. In 2004, New Wimbledon again opened its doors. His troupe was headed by renowned British choreographer, winner of the Olivier award Matthew Bourne. Under his guidance here have been supplied the musical "blood Brothers" ("the Corsican brothers" by Alexander Dumas), the rock Opera "Jesus Christ superstar" and "Cats" by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The theatre is also proud of its reputation of "home of pantomime London" – a pantomime in the British sense, i.e. children's musical Comedy with a simple plot. Recently in this pantomime "Aladdin's Lamp" in a role of the Genie was made by the star of "Baywatch" Pamela Anderson.
