On the site of the present Cathedral of Mdina in Roman times was located the Villa of the Governor Publius, who was baptized by the Apostle Paul and became the first Bishop of Malta. Later there was built a Church, but the earthquake of 1693 destroyed her. The current Cathedral was built by the architect Lorenzo Gough.
Surprisingly proportional to the original facade and the dome give the Cathedral is extremely impressive appearance. The Church interior is decorated with gilded carvings and painted vaults and apses. From the old Church building has been preserved wall with a mural Mattia Preti "the Shipwreck of Saint Paul. Deserves attention and tabernacle work of Benvenuto Cellini.
In the Museum of the Cathedral houses a collection of paintings, prints, drawings from the collection of count Saverio Marchese. Here you can see works by dürer, Rembrandt, and Church clothes, books for choral chants, a collection of coins.
