St Paul's Church was built in 1575 and rebuilt in 1692 on the site of an ancient chapel. Under it is a grotto, where a few weeks preached the Apostle Paul. According to another legend, he languished in prison. In 1990, Pope John Paul II visited the grotto and prayed here. His farewell prayer "God bless Malta and Maltese" is written on the memorial plate.
