Lake Skadar Photo: lake Skadar

The Skadar lake is the star attraction and national Park of Montenegro, located in the East, in the valley of the Zeta-Skadar, which is quite close to the border with Albania (on the territory of the latter is only 1/3 of the lake). Skadar lake is the largest not only in Montenegro, but also on the Balkan Peninsula, its territory covers approximately 475 square kilometers Large part of the lake coast is now swamped.

Assume that before the lake was a Bay of the Adriatic sea. However, the freshwater lake, and its reservoir is replenished by the rivers of Crnojevic, Moraca, and other smaller.

The nearest settlement is the village of Virpazar, which was founded in 1242. In the middle Ages he was a key trading center, which contributed to its geographical position. Also the village is one of the first got a post office.

The climate in this area is typical Mediterranean, due to the close proximity of the Adriatic sea. This climate is characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot summers. The water temperature in the lake can reach a peak of 27 degrees.

Historically, the lake was inhabited by Slavic tribes, and with the advent of Christianity, it was built several Orthodox monasteries (uranine with 1233, beška, Starchevo, Moronic, etc.). Also to this day preserved ruins of fortresses built in the period of confrontation between the Turkish intervention: the remains of the former capital of Zabljak (which is then moved in Cetinje), the fortress of Humour and Lesandro that were built in the XIII-XIX centuries.

Flora and fauna off the coast of the lake is rich in unique species. Here are just a few types of fish found in the lake: carp, mullet, bleak, Rudd, salmon, roach. On the shores of the lake can be observed not less than 260 species of birds: ducks, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, herons, etc. Some species of bird species are rare, such as black IBIS or Dalmatian Pelican and found only here, in the area of Skadar lake.
