Theatre in the South West was founded in 1977 by the people's artist of Russia Valery Belyakovich. Originally it was an Amateur theatre Studio in the outlying area of Moscow. The actors were students, workers and employees. The theater building they built themselves, on their own. In the theater hall was a hundred seats.
In 1985, the theatre was awarded the title of "national Theatre". In 1986, the theatre has received the prize of the Moscow Komsomol. In 1987, the theatre took part in theatrical experiment – the transition to self-sufficiency and sustainability. The theatre became a permanent member of theatre festivals and various shows, both in Russia and abroad. The theatre is well-known in Poland, Finland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Italy, Germany, UK and Austria, Holland, USA and Japan. Theatre in the South West described as representing a new Russian art in the period of glasnost.
In 1991, the theatre received the status of State theater at the culture Committee of Moscow. Since 2011, the theater's artistic Director is Oleg Nikolaevich Leoushin. In the troupe of young actors: Olga Avilov, Dmitry Astapenko, Michael Belyakovich, Hope Bychkov, Victor Borisov and others.
The theatre performances captivate the viewers brightness and novelty of Director's decision, the coherence of an ensemble performance, an extraordinary sincerity of the actors, citizenship, entertainment. The directing performances in modern rhythms, in streams of light and music, reveals a new classic play. Shakespeare, Moliere, Chekhov and Gogol get a new, sometimes startling sound. In the playbill lot of different productions of "the Marriage" by Gogol, "Caligula" Camus. "Macbeth" by Shakespeare, "the Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov. "The lower depths" Gorky. "Too married taxi driver" by ray Cooney, "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles, "Dogs" Sergienko, and many others.
