The Church of San Antonio del Prat del Campanar is an ancient temple located near the village of Arinsal on the way to the famous mountain resort of the same name. Actually, from the Romanesque Church was built on this site in the twelfth century, little has survived. The avalanche that swept this slope in the XIII - XVII centuries, virtually razed it to the ground.
Already in the twentieth century, namely in 1969, has begun to carry out archaeological excavations, which proved to be quite fruitful. Over the excavations in 1973 In 1975 the Church of San Antonio was restored from discovered the remnants of Roman walls, two side walls with doors, corners and the most part of the apse. The reconstruction was supervised by architect Pierre Canturi.
The Church has a rectangular nave with a cone shaped roof, which is rarely to be found in the valleys of the Principality of Andorra, and a semicircular apse, decorated with beautiful pilasters and arches. As excavations show that the original temple had four apses, but only one of them was restored during the renovation work.
In addition, during excavations near the South wall was found a few skeletons and foundations of the premises, it is assumed that it was from the Foundation of the bell tower. Although discovered during excavations fragments of wall paintings were very much, they are still at addition not given the full picture image. Presumably these paintings date back to XII-XIII century
In 1983, the Rossel family, who owned and was the Church during the reconstruction made an addition of the South wing, turning it into your family vault.
Although the Church of Sant Andreu del Prat Campanar was rebuilt not so long ago, thanks to the quality work of modern architects-reenactors it has the appearance of a very ancient structure.
