The great synagogue in Pilsen is located outside the historic centre, but it is impossible to pass by. It is located a few metres from the Opera house on a noisy Avenue. This is one of the largest and most spacious of the Jewish temples in the world. According to estimates of the local guides, in the Pilsen synagogue sits about 2 thousand people.
The synagogue was built in 1892 by order of the local Jewish community. Lush decor facade, tall towers topped with domes, synagogue owes to the genius of the architect of Emmanuel Klotz. After a careful consideration in its design contains elements characteristic of Moorish architecture, as well as parts used in the construction of Romanesque and Gothic buildings. All this fancy decorative mixture makes the synagogue a very harmonious and elegant.
For architectural drawings the height of the towers flanking the main entrance, was equal to 65 meters, but in reality, the towers rise only 45 meters. This amendment was made at the request of municipal government, which did not want to be next to the majestic Cathedral greater than the height of the synagogue.
Such great synagogue was appropriate in the city, where at the beginning of the XX century lived many Jews. Unfortunately, the events of the Second world war have significantly reduced their numbers, so now the synagogue attended by about 70 people. For services, just one small room. Main, richly decorated hall is now used for the holding of various events: performances of musicians, singers, artists.
