Cathedral of Porvoo was built in the mid XV. on the site of the old Church and received its name in honor of the mother of Jesus Christ – Mary. Until the beginning of the XVIII century. the temple has been repeatedly burned and plundered by invaders of the city.
In 2008. the Cathedral was last renovated after the arson and re-lit, it restored worship. The temple can accommodate up to 800 people. It is the venue of the wedding ceremony, christening. The interior of the Church is made form high vehicle.
The status of a Cathedral he received in 1723. after the Northern war of Vyborg was ceded to Russia.
For Finland, this temple has a special significance, because here in March 1809., Russian Emperor Alexander I announced the annexation of Finland to Russia in the status of an Autonomous Grand Duchy. From that day began the Finnish statehood.
