Basarbovski a monastery in honor of St. Dmitry Basarbovsko is located near the homonymous village, in the valley of the river Rusenski-Scrap, the nearest town of Ruse is 10 kilometres from the monastery. This is the only active monastery complex, carved into the rocks, which operates in Bulgaria until now.
Rock monastery founded in the era of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, it was first mentioned in 1431 in the tax register of the Ottoman Empire.
After the liberation of Bulgaria, the monastery during the nineteenth century were empty, but since 1937 father lived here Chrisant, who came here from the Transfiguration monastery. It gave new life to an ancient religious center.
St. Dmitry basarbovski born in the end of XVII century in the neighboring village of Basarbovo spent all his life in the monastery. His remains were buried in the village Church, but in connection with the Russo-Turkish war, his relics were moved to the Church of St. Constantine and Helen in Bucharest. There they are stored today.
In the monastery, a path leads through green yard, where it is still preserved well, which was dug St. Demetrios. Local residents have a belief that this well water has medicinal properties.
At the foot of the monastery are cave-dining room and two utility rooms that have been excavated in 1956. 48 steps lead up to a rocky area with alcove, where, according to legend, slept St. Dmitry. And to the right niche – a Church with a carved iconostasis, made in 1941. Here, the icon on which the Saint is depicted in full growth.
Another stone staircase leads to a natural cave, where the burial of a monk Hrisanta – the monk who in 1937 revived the monastery. This cave serves as the ossuary, there is also a Museum.
On 26 October, the day of St. Demetrios, there has been a Church festival. In the monastery, tourists can purchase icons and various information materials. Opportunities for placement is not provided.
