The Church of San Pedro de Attacks Photo: the Church of San Pedro de Attacks

The Church of San Pedro de Atacama is located in the homonymous square of the town. It is an important architectural landmark and one of the oldest churches in the country.

There are documents showing that in 1557 on the site was a chapel, which served as a priest of don cristóbal díaz de Los Santos. The current Church was built on the site of a chapel Dating back to the year 1745. Having 41 m in length and 7 5 m in width, the Church of San Pedro de Atacama resembles a huge ship, miraculously found himself in the Atacama desert. In the Church is a spacious nave, transept and graceful archways. The altar of the Church, probably the only of its kind in Chile, made in the Baroque style and is divided by columns into three parts with niches.

From the West the Church was the bell tower with four bells, built in 1782. But in 1860, the tower was destroyed. In the late nineteenth century on this place was erected a wooden bell tower, which was replaced by a stone in 1964, during the next reconstruction of the Church.

The main material that was used in the construction of the Church, - stone and limestone. The altar and arches carved from stone. The roof is thatched and the walls are plastered with lime mortar.

The Church of San Pedro de Atacama was declared a national monument of Chile in 1951.
