Ancient legends tell us about the Greek navigators, who in the year 891, were caught in a terrible storm off the Cape Fiolent. Furious waves carried them violently to simmer the huge rocks. The frightened sailors, feeling his loss, began to pray to St. George. According to an old legend, the Saint heard their prayers, and was on the island near the shore, and cleared up a storm immediately subsided.

Unexpectedly saved the Greeks rose to the island. There their eyes had wondrous icon of St. George. They moved the icon to the shore and founded a monastery in honour of St. George in gratitude for his salvation. This icon remained in the monastery until 1779. At the invitation of the Russian government, Metropolitan Ignatius went to Mariupol in the same year, having moved from the Crimea together with the Greeks, and took with him the wonderworking icon. He installed it in Kharlampievskoe Church. Currently, the icon of St. George, which was found on a cliff is located in Kiev, in the State Museum of fine arts of Ukraine.

The Church, which is in a cave near Cape Fiolent, turned into a monastery, called St. George. For many centuries, the convent was directly dependent on the Patriarch of Constantinople. In 1794 it was subordinated to the Holy Synod. After that, the monastery received the name of Balaklava St. George's monastery. After a few years since March 1803 the monastery was considered as a base for naval priests. During the Great Patriotic war completely turned into ruins fraternal building, hotel, cells, refectory and many other buildings.

To revive the monastery began in 1991 during the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the monastery. Blessed the monastery of the Bishop. George rock instead of the lost cross, hoisted a new seven-cross. It is made of metal and weighs 1400 pounds. The blessing he received in the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the helicopter arrived on the rock, where it is installed.
