On the high hill of Arzamas is its centerpiece is the resurrection Cathedral. The magnificent temple, surrounded by monasteries and churches, in clear weather is visible for tens of kilometers.
The Grand Cathedral was built by the famous architect Mikhail Petrovich Corinth in honor of the victory of Russian army over Napoleon in 1812, the Church was built entirely by donations from parishioners and construction are often suspended for lack of funds and the city fire in 1823. The date of the Foundation of the building is 1814, and completion of all work – 1842. The Cathedral in the classical style, in terms reminiscent of a Greek cross, laid on the square, rises nearly fifty meters, and the width and the length of the building over sixty meters. Interior finish resurrection Cathedral made large murals in black and white on biblical subjects: "the Phenomenon of the Holy Trinity, Resurrection of Christ", "Holy virgin," and "the Cathedral of all saints."
During the time of the destruction of the temples resurrection Cathedral were to blow up, but encountering fierce resistance from local residents, the temple decided to just close. One of the few remaining cathedrals in the Volga region in 1947 returned to service.
In our day a beautiful monument of history and architecture returned to the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, has been restored and is the main attraction of Arzamas.
