Barnaul Znamensky convent – one of the attractions of the Altai territory. In June 1754 in Barnaul took place the consecration of the new Church in honor of the Holy and righteous Zechariah and Elizabeth. By 1772, the Church building was severely dilapidated. Then it was decided to build a new Church. A new wooden Church was built in 1778 with funds donated by local residents. The author of this project was the student of I. I. Polzunov Chernitsyn.

In 1844 the famous architect turski has drafted a new three-altar stone of the Church, which submitted to the Tomsk provincial construction Commission. However, this project was not implemented, and only in August, 1852, obtained a Charter for the construction of a new stone Church. The laying of the temple took place in 1853, the Final draft of the stone Church was approved in 1856, and two years on the donations of the faithful, on Sennaya square was built an amazing temple with a three-tiered bell tower and twelve bells. In 1916 at the Church of the sign erected a stone chapel in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

After October 1917, the Church suffered the same fate as most other churches in Russia – it was closed. In October 1918, the congregation decided every year to make some money to maintain the temple, but the new government did not support this initiative, and in 1922, under the pretext of helping the starving in the Volga region began the campaign to confiscate Church valuables.

In April 1939 by the decision of the Executive committees of the Church was finally closed. In the same year, was demolished dome, broken bell tower. A little later the building was built on the second floor and did other outbuildings. The Church has lost its historical appearance.

At the end of 1992 it was returned to the Orthodox Church. From the beautiful temple there were only walls, warped buildings. Soon work began on restoration of the destroyed temple. In 1994, when Znamenskaya Church was founded a convent. Today in the monastery of 20 nuns.
