The archaeological Museum in Olynthos Photo: Archaeological Museum in Olynthos

The ruins of the ancient city of Olynthos is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. It is located on the Peninsula of Halkidiki, in 5 km from the town of Mudanya and 24 km South-West of the administrative center of the Peninsula of Polygyros. There is also an interesting Archaeological Museum of Olynthos.

The Museum opened its doors to visitors in July 1998. Today in the exposition of the Archaeological Museum presents exclusively audiovisual materials, which give a fairly clear idea about the city, and also describe in detail the archaeological site of Olynthos and restoration works. Unique artifacts found during excavations of ancient Olynthos, you can see in the excellent Archaeological Museum of Polygyros.

The city was built on the principle of urban system the famous Greek architect and town-planner Hippodamus of Miletus. The excavations revealed two broad Avenue, cross at a right angle narrower streets, thereby forming a similar size districts, each of which consisted of ten two-storey houses with small inner cobbled courtyard. Houses in ancient Olynthos were also equipped with a Sewerage system.

Houses were built of river stone and clay. In most homes, the floor was a well trodden ground, but a few buildings still had a mosaic floor. Probably, these houses belonged to the influential residents of Olynthos. Ancient mosaics river pebble well preserved to our days and has a high artistic and historical value (unique mosaics can be seen in the archaeological Park of Olynthos).

Photos and text documents represented in the Archaeological Museum of Olynthos, perfectly illustrate the features of everyday life of local residents, as well as social and economic life of the city.
