National Park Karula is the smallest nature reserve in Estonia. The area of the reserve, located in South Estonia, is 123 sq km, and Its status as the reserve received in 1993. This area is sparsely populated, as 70% of it is forest and lake.
There are a lot of hills, the highest point of the Karula upland is a mountain of Compimage height 137, 8 m above sea level. It is located near the village Lulamae. On Compimage equipped with an observation tower, which offers superb views of the picturesque landscapes of the reserve, but also on the highest point of the otepää upland.
At the reserve of 38 lakes that formed at the foot hills of Karula during the retreat of the land ice. The largest lake in the reserve is lake Ahiru which covers an area of 176 hectares, and the most deep – Savers a depth of 18 m.
The fauna is mostly represented by birds, of which there are about 157 species. Among mammals it is home to wild bear, moose, lynx, Western ROE deer. From smaller – squirrels, foxes, ferrets, beavers, raccoons.
At the center, located in the village Ahearne, you can find all the information about the structure, organisation and nature of the Park. In the same center is permanent and seasonal exhibitions where you can learn more about the inhabitants of the reserve.
National Park Karula has everything you need for active tourism and passive recreation. There are bike trails, different length, and also Hiking, training and walking trails.
It is worth noting a long walking trail, which extends for 36 km, It is a circular trail with information boards. Also interesting will be the training landscape trail is 7 km long. At the beginning of the trail there is a Parking. Trail 16 is provided with information boards, in addition there is a viewing platform and observation tower of Rebaseline, whose height is 30 meters. In addition, the reserve Karula has a nature trail, made especially for children. Length of the trail, which starts near the centre of Karula national Park, just 500 meters – the distance that will be mastered by even the smallest child. The children's trail is 10 information boards, 7 rides, and 9 thematic objects, providing the opportunity to be active and play.
