The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Vigo is located in the historical part of the city of Vigo, near the Central city square. The building of the Cathedral was built in the early 19th century, on the site previously located here the old Church of Santa Maria.
The first Church building was erected in the 12th century, as evidenced by documented facts. Almost throughout the 14th century the Church was rebuilt and by the early 15th century appeared in a new guise, in the style of Gothic. In 1589, the Church building was looted by British pirates under the command of the Drake. In the early 19th century the Church building was badly damaged during the war against Napoleon's army. A few years after the end of the war, construction began on a new Church building by the architect Melchor de Prado-and-mariƱo. The new building is a striking example of neoclassical style of Galicia, was completed in 1838.
Made of light-colored stone facade of the Church is simple and streamlined. The main decoration of the facade are two of bell tower, built in the Baroque style. The Cathedral is a Church with one Central and two side aisles. On both sides of the nave are chapels. The main altar of the Cathedral, dedicated to Holy Dormition mother of God, made in the churrigueresque style. The apse of the Church is decorated with beautifully executed image of Christ Winner.
In between services, the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Vigo is open to visitors.
