In summer 2008 in the city of Sevastopol was a monument to Catherine II. To the day of the founding of the city (225 years) the statue of the Empress in bronze took his place on St. Catherine street (now it is Lenin street).
The role of Catherine II in the fate of the city and the whole of the Crimean Peninsula is very high. It was signed in 1784, the Ordinance on the city name, otherwise at Sevastopol would be another name. The reign of Catherine II was marked by the victories of the Russian army over Turkey, and Russia received the long-awaited access to the Black sea, Crimea.
Where now stands the monument to the Queen, in 1854-1855 year was the residence of the Hero of the Defense of Sevastopol, a military commander and Lieutenant General Eduard Totleben. He also was an important figure in the history of the city.
The monument to the Queen is made in the form of a figure mounted on a round column, its base is a square. The monument has a height of -6, 35 m. the Upper part of the column is made in the shape of a hexagon and there is a monogram of Queen, Sevastopol Bay, together with the decree on the Foundation of the city. The Queen is dressed in ceremonial clothes, in her right hand a sceptre, the symbol of the Royal power, scroll of decrees in the left. Her face displays the greatness and peace.
The authors of the sculpture - Stanislav Chizh together with architect Gregory'yants - applied for his masterpiece different materials. For example, the hexagon and the plinth are made of brown granite, the column is of a dirty-green granite, cartouche and the sculpture, which weighs 940 kg, made of bronze.
The idea to erect a monument to the Queen emerged from the City Council of veterans. In 1997, the authors prepared the draft of the monument, and he was presented to the public. Residents expressed their approval on the matter. Because of the great value and some political reasons the project was implemented in reality only in 2008.
