The feat of the brig "mercury" was repeated by the crew of the steamer "Vesta" fifty years later. This ship was owned by a Russian company engaged in shipping and trade, and for many years he made voyages on the Black sea, running passengers and various goods. But this ship was different, not quite peaceful, and not an easy heroic destiny.
When the war started the Russians from the Turks in 1877 - 1878 years, that was the question about the need to increase the Russian military fleet. Steamer "Vesta" was purchased by the government and converted for military action: equipped with modern weapons, the latest control devices, mines. The crew gathered volunteers, was appointed commander Baranov N. M. and the steamer "Vesta" has turned into a light cruiser.
July 11, 1877, the steamer "Vesta" in Constanta met with Turkish speedboats battleship Fethi-Bulent mausoleum, which had strong artillery and more powerful armor. It was not easy to decide the captain-Lieutenant Baranov, really aware of the opponent's force to join the battle.
The unequal battle lasted about five hours. Steamer "Vesta" suffered losses. Killed the commander of artillery Chernov K. D., there were many wounded, and the commander of the ship was wounded. In addition, the vessel caught fire, but nobody even thought to retreat. Approaching the Turks, producing good accurate shots, Russian artillery damaged the tower of the battleship, and then fired a powerful blast. In clubs of a black smoke, the Russians saw that Fahti-Bulent mausoleum" retreats.
Though the flag was riddled with multiple bullet holes, the ship Vesta returned to port with a victory. All crew members were awarded medals and orders. Heroes killed in battle and buried on the North side of the St. Michael's cemetery. On their grave in 1886 was a monument to the sculptor Bruchalski P. O., which is a huge cross-shaped pylon, which installed on a wide pedestal. Cast iron nuclei were mounted in the base of the pylon. His support of gun barrels that resemble columns.
On the front side of the monument to the relief of the cross, and under it there is a plaque on which is carved the story of the heroism of "Vesta". Side attached a memorial plaque with the names of those killed in an unequal battle. The height of this commemorative monument, made of granite – 5 meters. Kernel and gun barrels made of cast iron.
