Castle in Balcova Photo: Castle in Balcova

Castle in Balcova located in the same city on Castle hill at a height of 396 meters above sea level. It was built of local red and green shale and Sandstone. Probably the first was built a stone tower, located on the highest point of the hill, however, documentary evidence of this exists. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1277.

The castle was founded by the Duke Legnica II and quickly developed. In the mid-fourteenth century it was part of the city fortification and was connected to the city walls. In 1392 the castle became the property of the Czech kings.

During the Thirty years war, the castle was under siege, but remained unbowed. Already in 1810 it became the property of the State Treasury of Prussia, after which the building fell into disrepair. In 1813, after the Napoleonic wars, it housed the Russian soldiers.

After Hitler came to power, the castle became the property of the state. It is believed that it was the location of the research center responsible for the oversight of local factories.

In 1953 in some areas of the castle was opened a branch of the National Museum of Wroclaw. On the ground floor you can see engravings, furniture and genealogical tables. On the second floor was a collection of weapons: swords, halberds, armour. Currently there is a permanent exhibition located on the first floor.

In July 2001, the Institute of archaeology, University of Wroclaw has conducted archaeological research aimed at studying the ancient principles of the construction of the castle.
