Cistercian monastery in Henrique Abbey and the Baroque Church of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, located in Lower Silesia. This Cistercian monastery is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the territory of Silesia. The Abbey operates today, and is a Polish Shrine.
The origin of the monastery dates back to 1222 when Prince Henry the Bearded has received local land under his control. Construction continued under Henry II the Pious, which meant that the Abbey was under the patronage of the Dukes of Silesia. The first monks lived in the monastery in may 1227, and a year later was consecrated a wooden Church. In 1304 began construction of a new Gothic Church and monastery. In addition, the cemetery was organized.
The Hussite wars brought to the monastery of unhappiness: the building was burned and the monks fled in Wroclaw. Later, the Abbey suffered from the Czech king in 1459. After the Thirty years war began the rapid development of the monastery. The Church was rebuilt in Baroque style. The altar was created in 1684 famous painter Michael Milmanom.
During the war between Prussia and Austria 1741-1762, hindered the development of the Abbey. The monastery was repeatedly placed troops, who plundered religious treasures. In 1801 the Prussian authorities closed the school and captured the monastery library with rich collection of books in 20,000 volumes. In 1810 the Prussian king Frederick William III, closed the monastery after 582 years of its existence. Later in the building of the Abbey was open elite clinic for the mentally ill. During the Third Reich in the monastery was organized by the military factory. At the end of the war, the monastery was plundered and destroyed.
In 1949 the Abbey back in the hands of the Cistercians, and in 1990 it became the property of the Archbishop of Wroclaw. Currently, there is a Catholic secondary school.
