During the liberation war with the Turks in Bulgaria killed many Russian soldiers. In Bulgarian cities in their honor are monuments and memorials, and in Sofia in front of the building Telegraph Agency on Tsarigradsko highway built Russian guards the monument, also known as the Monument of Russian generals. It is dedicated to the generals D. A. Filosofov and V. V. Catley, who died in 1877 21 December.
On this day, the Turks pursued a third of the guards infantry division retreated from Taskesen, Chandrika and Aragonesa. Vasily of Catala, Lieutenant General, chief of the division, and Dmitri Philosophers, major General, commander of the first brigade, marched in the column head. The rear guard of the Turkish army organized an ambush, which was well disguised, at the entrance to the gorge Petrisko near the village of Mirkovo. From a distance of seven hundred feet by the Turks opened fire with their guns, which fell mainly on the division commander and his entourage. Basil Catala was shot dead on the spot, and severely wounded Philosophers on the same day died in Orhaniye.
Guards the monument in 1885, was built on the donations that are made servants of the third infantry division of guards. Almost half a century later, in 1942, on the orders of Bulgarian officer-fascist monument was destroyed. It was restored fully only in 1978, one hundred years after the memorable historical events. But later, in 1989, when power was removed by the Communist party of Bulgaria, the monument not caring none of the authorities goes. Looters and vandals destroyed a monument by removing part of the cladding and metal products.
A few years ago, guards the monument was again restored, the Grand opening was held in 2008 on 19 February. The event was attended by representatives of the Bulgarian and the Russian side – diplomats, politicians, military officers, men of culture.
