Founded in 1238, the city of Sukhothai was the capital of the eponymous Kingdom. Preserved Buddhist temples of the Sukhothai world Heritage and are under the control of UNESCO. The city's name translated from the Pali means “the flowering of happiness”.
Kingdom became the first Thai government on these lands, previously all power belonged to the Khmer kings of Cambodia. The greatest temple of the Kingdom is Wat Mahathat, located in the heart of the historic town. Surrounded by lakes with lotuses it consists of dozens of buildings and more than 200 Chedi (stupas). Also he is the most well preserved temple in the whole complex Sukhothai.
In the Northern part of the city is one of the oldest temples of the Kingdom of Wat Phra Phai Luang. It was built by the Khmers and combines elements of Buddhism and Hinduism. Scientists believe that he was the most important Khmer temple in the state, as well as Wat Mahathat in the late Sukhothai. The temple consists of three high prangos (stupas resembling corn on the cob), which is a classic Khmer architecture.
In Wat si Chum in the Northern part of the city you can see the biggest Buddha statue Sukhothai era and one of the largest in the history of Thailand. Its width is 11 meters and a height of about 15 meters. According to the legend, once on the top of the temple stairs leading up, there are parishioners Buddha spoke and gave advice.
