On the territory of modern Bulgaria established more than four hundred works of Russians who died fighting for the freedom of the Bulgarian people. Almost forty of them are in Sofia region.
In the centre of Sofia is a Russian monument. This is the first memorial, which was erected in the Bulgarian capital, dedicated to the war between the Ottomans and the Turks (1877 and 1878). By the way, where today stands the monument of Sofia ran Osman Pasha in Pernik in 1877 22 December.
Funds for the erection of this monument was created by the Russians, opened the memorial was in 1882, June 29. Who was the author of the project is not known, but is believed to have created it or Vakar, the architect who designed similar monuments in the Bulgarian towns of Pleven, Dobrich, Veliko Tarnovo, Razgrad and Svishtov, or Sherwood Vladimir Iosifovich, famous Russian architect who created the Moscow monument-chapel "grenadiers – the heroes of Plevna".
The shape of the monument is an obelisk. Four-sided pyramid located on the pedestal, which consists of three plates, has a truncated top. On the East side of the obelisk marble bas-reliefs that depict the order of St. George and the state emblem of Russia. Below is the inscription: "In the reign of Alexander II Emperor of Russia." On the West side of the monument is a slab inscribed with the truncated biblical phrase.
Since the late 19th century in the Bulgarian capital, there is a lot of urban change. Russian monument was in their midst, but was saved at the same place. The monument has been reconstructed several times, now it is almost in its original form.
