National fame and glory to Taganrog by no means a Harbor or a decree of the Empress, and the son of a merchant of Chekhov, who later became recognized by the Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Walking in Taganrog, literally on every street encounter places and objects related to the life and work of A. P. Chekhov or with the characters of his works, indeed, here every stone Chekhov knows". The city that made him famous native, honors the memory of the famous writer, surname Chekov looks with street names, museums, monuments and squares.
The monument to A. P. Chekhov is close to the house-Museum "Chekhov's Cottage". He is a bronze sculpture of a young writer, sitting on a rock with a book. The monument is quite impressive in size, the height of the bronze sculpture is three meters plus a pedestal of Mytishchi granite – more than three feet tall! The monument is the fruit of joint work of sculptor Julian of M. Rukavishnikov and architect G. A. Zakharov, was established in late January 1960, although the first decision to install a monument to the great writer in his homeland was taken 50 years earlier in 1910. Then began raising funds for its construction. The second resolution was in 1935, and the third in 1944. In 1944, at the red square in Taganrog was open bust A. P. Chekhov, it was a bronze replica of the set in 1935 in the courtyard of the Museum "Chekhov's Cottage" a plaster bust of the writer sculptor V. G. Morozova.
The present monument to A. P. Chekhov since 1960, is located in the Chekhov square (formerly the Alexander square), an area of about 1, 5 hectares. The square appeared in Taganrog on the 75th anniversary of A. P. Chekhov, renovated and landscaped after the great Patriotic war and still pleases the inhabitants of Taganrog cozy benches, spacious lawns and shady green trees. In 2008, underwent thorough restoration work of the monument and the reconstruction of the square.
