Ithaca Island Photo: Ithaca Island

The legendary Greek Ithaca – one of the Ionian Islands. It is located to the East of the North-West coast of Kefalonia, which is separated by a small Strait. This small, picturesque island is literally immersed in greenery. Ithaca is often referred to as the birthplace of Homer's Odyssey, although reliable evidence for this was found.

Most likely, the island has been inhabited since 3000-2000 BC, but their higher economic and cultural prosperity reached Ithaca in the Mycenaean period (1500-1100 BC). It is believed that the island was the capital of the Ionian Kingdom, which was one of the most powerful States of that time, and the port of itaqui played an important role in trade relations across the Mediterranean. Over time, the impact of Ithaca and its population decreased significantly, but, nevertheless, the island continued to live her rather active life (as evidenced by archaeological excavations). The island has repeatedly changed its owners. One after another came the Romans, the Franks, Byzantines, Turks, Venetians, French, English... So continued until 1864, when Ithaca together with the other Ionian Islands joined Greece.

The capital of the island of Ithaca is the city of Vathi, which is located on the shore of one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It's a cozy town with mainly two-storey houses, roofed with red tile, streets paved with cobblestones, and architectural reminders of the Venetian era. City harbour in the holiday season is full of beautiful snow-white yachts. In the city you should visit a small Archaeological Museum and the Museum of folklore and culture. Near Vathy is the legendary Cave of the nymphs, the Aretusa fountain and the ruins of the ancient city of Allgomera. Interesting

The archaeological Museum there and in the town of Stavros (the second largest settlement of the island). Here are ancient relics found in the cave Loizou and during excavations on the hill Plicata near the city. But the main attraction, of course, are the ruins of an ancient Palace, which many historians describe as the ownership of the legendary Odysseus.

Picturesque Ithaca is famous for its beautiful beaches and secluded coves with crystal clear water, and the fascinating ancient history of the island every year attracts an increasing number of tourists.
