The necropolis of Pantalica, located on the South-East of Sicily, consists of approximately 5 thousand tombs carved in the rocks Hyblaean mountains in the valley of the rivers Anapo and Calcinara. Age necropolis – from 2, 5 to 3, 5 thousand years. It is believed that it was created by the Sicilians – the people that appeared in Sicily in the late bronze age. Today Pantalica together with Syracuse is included in the UNESCO world Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO.

The necropolis is located on a plateau surrounded by canyons that formed the river Anapo and Calcinara, between the cities Perla and Sortino. Throughout the plateau there are many Hiking trails that allow tourists to explore the nature and history of these places. The valley of Anapo can be reached in a 10-kilometer trail, which runs between the cities of Syracuse and Vizzini. The road to the plateau to turn towards Sella di Filiberto or to the side of the Grotta dei Pipistrelli – bat Cave. The dress itself is part of the three conservation areas – preserve "Orientate Pantalica", Valle Dell Anapo and Torrente cava Grande.

In the first half of the 13th century BC all the coastal settlements of these places have disappeared with the advent of various peoples inhabiting the territory of Italy in those years. The indigenous population took refuge in the mountains, where people could hide. According to ancient sources, in 728 BC, there appeared the king Eblan, who founded the colony of Megara, Iblea. However, creating at the same time, Syracuse and continuous growth in power of the city determined the decline of the Kingdom of Eblana. From those times have survived megalithic buildings the Palazzo del Principe, also known as Inaction, and the necropolis of Pantalica. The latter consists of several necropolises, of which the oldest is considered the Northwest (dates back to the 12th century BC) and the biggest – North. The other two are known as the necropolis of Filiberto and the necropolis of Cavetta (it also can be seen the buildings of the Byzantine era).
