The archaeological Museum was opened in 1963. The collection consists of the objects found during the excavations in the city and throughout Macedonia. Exposure external halls arranged in chronological order: the Neolithic age, classical Greece, the Roman period mosaics of the Hellenistic culture. In the internal halls are exhibited finds from the Sindos.

In 1980 the Museum was made annexe, which exhibited a magnificent gold jewelry of ancient Macedonia, including the objects found during excavations of ancient necropolises. Here you can see the finest gold wreaths, caskets with the famous multibeam Macedonian star on the cover, gold bracelet, Dating from the III century BC and much more. Special attention deserves the Derveni Crater – a bronze vessel of the III century BC with dancing figures of maenads and satyrs.
