The family of the future the outstanding composer settled in the town in 1836. The composer's father, Andrey Rimsky-Korsakov was a man of unusually honest, kind and progressive. Arriving in the town, he gave freedom to all his servants. Nicholas was born March 6, 1844 in Tikhvin and lived here until the age of 12. The boy showed a talent for music since the age of two. 6 years old neighbor-an old lady E. A. Unkovsky taught him music. After about two years his mentor became O. F. Feil noticed in Nicolae remarkable musical ability. He then entered the St. Petersburg Marine corps and 18 years of age came home for the holidays.
Tikhvin period of his life, Rimsky-Korsakov was short, but his influence is great. Tikhvin motives are reflected in his work. This is a Russian folk song, which is part of the collection of Russian folk songs; Overture "Light festival" with local chimes of bells; the fragments of the Opera "Tsar's bride", "the snow maiden", "Pskov", "the Tale of Tsar Saltan" and others.
After his father's death, the building remained boarded up until 1872, and then some time belonged to private persons. In 1914, local residents expressed a desire to install on the house a commemorative plaque in honour of the 70th anniversary of the birth of the composer. But it appeared there only in 1923. During the great Patriotic war the house was seriously injured and required restoration.
The house-Museum of N. And. Rimsky-Korsakov was opened on 23 July 1944 by the government to the 100 anniversary from the birthday of the composer. The Museum is a monument of history and culture of Federal value. The main Fund of the Museum includes over 10,000 items.
House Rimsky-Korsakov was built in the early nineteenth century by the grandfather of the composer. The building is a wooden, one-story with mezzanine, on the main facade is the Suite of rooms. The house features original front doors, mouldings, flooring, furnace. In the organization and decoration of the Museum a large part was taken by the children and grandchildren of Nicholas Andreevich, who gave the Museum's collection of more than 200 memorial things.
