Located in Toledo Franciscan monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes is one of the main attractions of the city and one of its most majestic and beautiful buildings. This monastery was founded by king Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile in honor of the birth of their child, as well as to commemorate the victory over the forces of the Portuguese in the battle of Toro.
The construction of the monastery was begun by the architect Juan Guasa in 1477 and lasted for several decades. The main part of the building was completed in 1506. The main entrance to the convent, designed by the famous architect Alonso Covarrubias, was built in 1553. On the original draft, it was assumed that the monastery will be a Royal tomb. But then it so happened that Isabella and Ferdinand were buried in liberated Granada.
The monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes is an example of architecture of the Gothic period with the inherent elements of the Mudejar style. The Church has a Latin cross plan. The building's interior is impressively decorated and decor. The walls are decorated with images of eagles and emblems of the Royal dynasty, located in the upper gallery, a vaulted ceiling which is decorated with beautiful ornaments in Arabic style. A real work of art is the main altar, created in the 16th century by the sculptor Felipe Bharni and paintings of scenes of the passion of Christ and the Resurrection of Christ, made by the artist Francisco de Comentam. Special attention deserves the splendid cloister, completed in 1504 and is considered a true architectural masterpiece of the late Gothic period.
