Dougga Photo: Dougga

Dougga ruins of the ancient city, which has experienced several ancient eras, changing each other. The city is about 4 hours drive from Hammamet to the South-East of Carthage. According to historians, Dougga was built BC by a tribe of Berbers (in translation from their language "dugga" means "pasture"). A few hundred years after its founding, Dougga became the capital of the state Numidians, the ruler of which was Massini. In the second century before our era the city was captured by the Roman army. After the Romans, the city was under the authority of Byzantium. After the Roman Empire collapsed, the city was captured by the vandals, destroying much of it. Therefore, the city was able to avoid restructuring and to come down to us almost unchanged unlike major cities such as Carthage and Tunis.

The majority of the most prominent buildings were built between the II century BC to the III century BC the Most famous of them — the theater (168 BC), in which in summer hosts international festivals. In the ruins of Roman villas have been preserved mosaic floors and walls, in gardens and courtyards remained the base of the fountains. From Roman rule preserved columns of the temples of Saturn, Juno Celeste (the goddess Tanit in the Punic mythology). Near the temple of Saturn is the state Capitol building. There are two temple of Jupiter (in Greek mythology of Zeus and the goddess Minerva. Earlier this place was the statue of Jupiter, but it is up to our days almost not preserved, except for the stone foundations.

Although the area Dougie excavated's not all, this place is already a world heritage site by UNESCO.
