The Museum of crafts Luostarinen under the open sky is located in a unique artisan quarter in the city centre of Turku, near the hill Warioware, preserving the natural environment of ancient crafts.
At the end of XVIII – beginning of XIX century the area built for the lower classes, which included artisans, was a slum. But over time the town grew and turned Luostarinen from the suburbs to the Central part, where is the Museum of folk crafts today.
Wooden shops and houses tell visitors about the life of Finnish artisans in the XIX – XX centuries. The Museum under the open sky, you can see the house of a sailor, carpenter, manufacturer of tobacco, clock repair shop, and dwelling house 1960. and a Studio apartment of people who lived in this place. Here is its mail and a small shop selling sweets, made according to old recipes, and crafts.
In late August, the Museum hosts the annual Week of art and craftsmanship at an international level. In 1984, Luostarinen was awarded an international travel prize “the Gold Apple” for the uniqueness and authenticity of old buildings constituting a single whole with its historical location.
Luostarinen is an amazing place for tourists, where after a fascinating walk through the reserved area, one can sit in a cozy restaurant, tasting national dishes of Finnish cuisine – venison steak or baked fish.
