All the buildings in the historic part of Prachatice, including on the main square of the city, which is called Great, and earlier known as the Market, were built in the early XVI century. In 1507 by fire almost the whole city was destroyed. Patient citizens rebuilt all the houses, temples and other important historical monuments again.

A large area is the heart of the old town. Baroque and Renaissance houses surround the space that previously held the fairs and festivities, and now slowly stroll tourists looking stone fountain, decorated with sculpture in the Baroque style, photographing on the background of gingerbread facades, hiding from the sun or winter wind under the arcades Romanova and Besovskogo houses that were built in the XVI century on the Eastern part of the square. But during the Christmas and Easter holidays the area comes alive: here install tree, unfold the tent city, where you can buy Souvenirs, sweets and so on.

The house No. 29 was the school that was visited by Jan HUS. He came to this school from a neighboring village called Husinec.

In the house №13, which is also called Sarofim, currently operates a local history Museum.

However, the pride of Prachatice are considered to be two town hall – Old and New, which are separated by only one house. Old town hall is dated 1571. It is built in the Renaissance style and decorated with exquisite paintings in the style of sgraffito. Next door to the city hall on the site of a building that belonged to the Czech savings Bank, in 1903, the city Council built another Hall, now called New. The reason for the erection of this building was simple: lack of space for a growing staff. Corner tower of the city hall and the statue of the patron Saint, mounted on the front, have become symbols of a local authority.
