The Gothic Church of St. Michael has a long and complex history. The first monastery "in the meadows" with the Church was founded in 1183 on the michaelsberg mountain slope North of Ulm. Located on a busy trade route, the Augustinian monastery served as a refuge and hospital for travellers and pilgrims. Then the builders did not take into account that the location on a hill, is convenient for travelers to have a very significant disadvantage — the lack of drinking water. And in 1215, the monastery and Church in the mountains were abandoned and rebuilt on river Islands closer to the center of Ulm. In 1250 was built and consecrated a new three-span building, second Church. Michael. The Augustinians skillfully used the new location of the monastery, the rapid flow of the river was the driving force behind several blacksmiths and mill wheels.
During the siege of Ulm 1376, it was decided to transfer the important buildings and churches in the city limits, for reliable protection of the fortress walls. So the Church. Michael's "in the meadows" has received its third and final location.
In the following centuries the Church and the monastery was rebuilt several times, was closed and reorganized. A significant part of the buildings, the archives, library and relics were lost in the bombing of Ulm in 1944. In 1954, the building of the Church. Michael's "in the meadows" was partially restored, and radically rebuilt 1998 project artist Geyer.
Today the Church of St. Michael not only Catholic parish Church of Ulm, but the concert hall of organ music.
