As in any city of Spain, in the centre of Valladolid is the city's main square – Plaza Mayor. The principle of organization and construction of the Central squares of Spanish cities are the same everywhere – it is always the area of the correct form, surrounded on the perimeter adjacent to each other buildings. The first area, constructed in such a way, was precisely the Plaza Mayor in Valladolid.
Initially, the area on the site appeared in the middle of the 13th century. Near the square was the market, which attracted local traders, so this place was always crowded and lively. After a major fire that occurred in 1561, the area had to be completely rebuilt. The author of the reconstruction project was the architect Francisco de Salamanca. From that moment, the area began to serve as the city's main square, and was called Plaza Mayor.
The square is rectangular in shape, from her deep into the city's narrow streets diverge. On the Plaza Mayor is facing facades of the main buildings of the city, decorated with arcades supported by columns, and archways. Here stands the magnificent building of municipality Casa Consistorial, as well as the ancient building Zorrilla, built in 1884. Around the square there are many cafes and restaurants where you can relax and get acquainted with local cuisine.
In the center of the Plaza Mayor at solemn high pedestal there is a monument to count Pedro Anzures – one of the founders of Valladolid and the first city Lord. The monument was designed in 1903 by the sculptor Aurelio Carretero.
