The Uspenski Cathedral is the Orthodox Cathedral of Varna. Located in the heart of the city, in the square of St. Cyril and Methodius. The construction of the Church began in 1880 at the initiative of the king of Bulgaria, Alexander I Battenberg. In honor of the Empress of the Russian Empire Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, which had the Governor's aunt, the Church was consecrated in the name of the assumption of the Holy virgin.

The Foundation of the Church was created by architect from Odessa Meuse, and on the creation of the building itself bothered Varna architect P. Kupka. Funding for construction is mainly carried out by private donations, although the fundraiser was also held a raffle, during which the organizers sold about one hundred and fifty thousand tickets cost two leva each. Construction was completed in October 1885. By 1949 the walls of the temple came the painting, and in the 60-ies in the large Windows facing the square, stained-glass Windows were inserted. At the end of XX – beginning of XXI century in the Cathedral conducted the restoration of the frescoes, mounted ventilation system, updated coverage of the domes and the roof, and installed a unique system of exterior lighting of the building, designed to effectively enhance the beauty of its architecture in the evening.

The Cathedral of the assumption many consider one of the symbols of Varna, with its high bell tower offers excellent views of the entire city.
