On Snieszko - area of the city of Vilnius, located on the right Bank of the river, Willie - majestic, and simply the Church of the Holy Archangel Raphael. In General, the architecture of the temple belongs to the Baroque style, but the chancel and tower, which rises on both sides of the building reflect the architectural transition period between Baroque and Rococo.
The Church was built between 1702 and 1709 for years known Lithuanian patron Nicholas Casinocom with the financial support of the magistrates Casimir Sapieha and the Hetman michał radziwiłł. It was originally intended to Jesuits. In 1740, the Jesuits decided to start at the Church of the Jesuit monastery, which was valid until 1773, until the abolition of the Jesuit order.
For twenty years, the monastery became the property of Transdanubia. In 1792 the PR sold the temple of the Imperial government. By government order in the buildings of the monastery and Church were built barracks.
In 1812, Vilnius was occupied by Napoleon, who also did not spare a remarkable architectural heritage and began to use the Church as an Armory. The damage from the stay of the French warehouses was significant for the building of the temple and its interior. The temple was empty until 1824, when it was renovated and became a parish Church. The tranquility did not last long. Still reeling after the devastating invasion of France, the building was subjected to new tests. In 1832 it was placed Russian military warehouse.
In 1860, the Church was returned to believers. He became a parish. After that the temple was no longer closed. Now the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Archangel Raphael is an active Church. In it read service in Lithuanian and Polish languages.
In 1975 the Church was returned to its previous form, by complete restoration of the exterior and interior. Today anyone can join the history, to visit this wonderful monument and see it in all its simple grandeur.
The Church building is rectangular, with the front side on the sides of the temple has two towers that are in the ensemble with a triangular pediment in the middle of the building, look on it as the crown. On the second tier, in the recesses located on either side of the large Central window above the portal is installed plaster sculpture of the Archangel Raphael and Joseph Calasanzio, the founder and progenitor of the order of Transdanubia. In 1752 architect Jan Valens, Dinerstein, presumably together with Jan Nosemask was built two storey towers - the third and fourth. Graceful composition of both towers with columns, subtly curved eaves, gives the facade an aura of grace and splendor. In the architectural forms of both towers of the temple clearly shows the transition from Baroque to Rococo. Complicated forms of helmets is not typical for Baroque. The side facades are discreet and clean look. On top of the pediment at the back of the temple stands a small tower, which are complementary ensemble.
Church wall colors white stone, like the walls surrounding the monastery. The roofs of all these buildings, including the Church, painted in red.
The interior of the Church is notable primarily a large altar with a lot of columns, mounted on high pedestals, and plenty of amazing sculptures. All this gorgeous decoration is headed by the big picture, work of the famous Polish artist, depicting the Archangel Raphael.
The painting is framed with a gold frame. Columns and sculptures – white. The base and top of the columns - Golden. All sculpted figures have wings, also painted in gold color. Hanging from the arched ceiling chandeliers also white gold. This is a simple combination of white gold gives the Church a unique strict greatness, from which emanates purity and integrity.
