Bank square – one of the main squares in Warsaw. Situated in the city center near the Saxon garden.
Banking area was established in 1825 in the period of the Polish Kingdom to become one of the fashionable areas of the capital. Here there is a famous public institutions such as: Ministry of state revenue, Bank of Poland, Warsaw stock exchange. Originally the area was triangular in shape.
In 1944 during the Warsaw uprising the buildings on the square were destroyed, the area ceased to exist. After the war it was decided to reconstruct only a historical Western part of the square, rebuilding it in the form of a rectangle.
In the period of the Polish people's Republic Bank area was renamed Dzerzhinsky square. In 1951 Dzerzhinsky monument was erected in the southern part of the square. Demolished the monument was after the fall of communism in Poland.
Today on the Bank of the square is the famous blue skyscraper, built on the site of the former synagogue, which was destroyed by the Germans during the Second world war. Also on the square is the city hall building. And in place of the monument to Dzerzhinsky in 2001 a monument was erected to Juliusz słowacki..
